VC Jubilee Prize Presentations Report for 2003
What another excellent year. Congratulations to all those how have achieved results, but just as important to all those who turn up regularly, whatever the weather, behave appropriately, learn and improve their skills both on and off the road - a well done and thank you must go to all of you.
VC Jubilee as the youth development section of Brighton Excelsior is only made possible by the kind donation of time volunteers make to the club. Many thanks to you, and to BECC for providing young people with such opportunities.
Go-Ride/Clubmark
The club is continuing to provide excellent opportunities for fitness and social interactions for young people around the local area. It has received recognition from the National Governing Body of cycling, "British Cycling" as a Go-Ride registered club and we are attempting to achieve Clubmark accreditation. Both of these schemes identify implementation of sound, safe and effective club structure and good working practices for its young members and there is a high standard of qualified coaching and support.
Volunteers
Sally Page - club contact - to deal with enquiries in relation to membership and liase with British Cycling.
Shelley Charlton - club welfare officer - and has undergone Good Practice and Child Protection Training, any member or parent/guardian within any concerns or issues relating to behaviour of coaches or other members, can contact her.
Coaches - currently Sally Page, Ian Essex, Dave Gerrey are all undertaking forms of coach qualification courses to assist with the delivery of coaching sessions. Roy Page, still has overall responsibility for coaching activities.
Membership
Has remained consistent over the year, and with these two schemes in place, we envisage increases in new members joining as we become higher in profile locally, through newspapers, school links, open days, and other events, etc
Training
The following Sports Coach UK training courses have also been attended by our volunteers: Coaching Children and Young People, Equity in your Coaching, Club for All, which are requirements for Sport Englands Clubmark accreditation.
Grants
An Awards for All bid has been submitted for cyclo-cross bikes and coaching courses to the value of £4670. The result is due in March 2004.
Affiliations
We are currently completing the WSCC Youth Service affiliation process, as this will enable us to apply for additional funding for club activities.
We are also affiliated to the following bodies/organisations: British Cycling (BC), British Schools Cycling Association (BSCA), and Cycling Time Trials (CTT).
Social
Wednesday evenings continue to be success and create positive relationships amongst members and volunteers. BECC's Annual Picnic proved to be an enjoyable, relaxed ride, followed by a fun BBQ and we look forward to this coming years.
Racing
Our members have attended numerous events this year and our prize presentation indicates the successes of all our riders.

Sept 2003
What an excellent summer cycling season we have had. Congratulations to all those who have taken part in various rides, events and competitions throughout the region this year, you have managed to help keep VC Jubilee recognised for youth cycling development in the area. We couldn't continue without the contributions from many of our volunteers at the track and other events, we all really appreciate your assistance and experience, thank you so much. If any adults are interested in becoming a qualified coach to assist with the development of the club, please contact Roy.
We will publish a more comprehensive list of this years results soon, but we must congratulate Matt as he has got through to the GHS 10 mile time trial National Final, which will be held in Birmingham. Matts enthusiasm for cycle sport continues to grow, and we all wish him luck for this big event on the 13th September. Not far behind him in the regional 5.12 mile time trial was Peter who is another keen talent, and with his newly built bike will be hard to stop. GOOD LUCK MATT.
We hope everyone had good summer holidays. We broke with tradition and didn't meet on some Saturdays as so many people were away, or because Shoreham became overcrowded with other events (eg bank holiday, air show etc). But we are now back planning for our Autumn/Winter season, which we hope will see our numbers grow due to increased publicity and further events where we are seen to be attending and achieving some results. See the Dates section below for some local events, more will follow when the season really gets into swing. This time of year we'll be seeing cyclo-cross and mountain bike events start to take over from the road and track events, these will keep everyone fit through the winter months. It will be great to see as many members as possible at all local events.
Our Wednesday club nights will start again in September. Special training eg sport psychology, i-Magic virtual reality league, and other fitness, rock climbing and fun sessions will be planned, along with the usual football, table-tennis, snooker, videos being available. PLEASE NOTE: they now run from 7.00pm to 8.30pm at the AOAC for 30p per evening. Please could we ask for occasional contributions of ping-pong balls/bats, as we seem to get through quite a few of these.
Some other good news is, Roy has got a new job! He has got back into a sport related job by being offered the position of South East Regional Coaching and Club Development Officer, and this is with the national governing body - "British Cycling". He will still continue to be VC Jubilee's and Brighton Excelsior's club coach. He'll be doing a lot of travelling and promoting the new GO-RIDE scheme into schools and clubs across the region. This was "Improve" and we are currently in the process of transferring to this accreditation. GO-RIDE uses cycling skills to develop young peoples cycling ability. Tests can also be carried out to find potential "future" riders for the BC Talent Team programme. See www.britishcycling.org.uk for more info. VC Jubilee will be arranging some testing in the near future.
