VC Jubilee Prize Presentations Report (15th March 2006) for 2005

Another successful and eventful 2005. VC Jubilee as the youth development section of Brighton
Excelsior is only made possible by the kind donation of time volunteers make to the club. Many
thanks to you, and to BECC for providing young people with some great opportunities and fun.

This evening gives us the opportunity to recognise the young riders that have achieved results
in races, improved their ability, but also to congratulate those that continue to just take part.
They show enthusiasm, have fun, learn from others and improve their skills both on and off the
road and give commitment to the club and all its activities, show respect to those that help
them, thus proving they are true sportspeople - well done and thank you to all of you. One
member in particular who this year has gone over and above all our ambitions is Peter Mitchell
who has been selected for the BC National Youth Sprint Squad and a potential for the Olympic
Development programme. This really emulates what VCJ is all about, and the possibilities that
are available to those that want and can go far, and fast! Pete is the one that has put the
effort in and deserves this recognition, our best wishes and support continue to go with him.

Accreditations: Go-Ride/Clubmark
We continue to use the National Governing Body of cycling, “British Cycling” Go-Ride framework
as it focuses our club activities. During 2005 we have successfully gone through the re-accreditation
process to ensure we are still operating effectively as a Sport England “Clubmark” club. We will
always be proud and able to say that we were the first cycling club in Britain to achieve Clubmark
status in 2004, this is a cross-sport recognition of sports clubs that are committed to providing
a safe, effective and child friendly environment. Both of these schemes identify implementation of
sound, safe and effective club structure and good working practices for its young members and there
is a high standard of qualified coaching and support.

Coaches/Volunteers
With many thanks to our coaching and volunteers for their support, we were able to assist some of
them further with our successful Awards for All grant for coaching and first aid courses (see below).
Hopefully now we will be able to make a real drive to increase participation again this year, now
we have more coaches.

With thanks to Shelley Charlton - Club Welfare Office/accounts, Roy Page, Ian Essex, Stewart Hunter,
Sally Page – coaches, Dave Gerrey Chairman and coach, Jen Frankish, Deryck Arnold, Malcolm Beeny –
friends/parents, for providing fantastic support and encouragement to the riding and club activities,
we’d like to thank them all for their commitment. BECC members also support racing activities which
again is much appreciated for the technical experience, especially Keith Balcombe and Mike Murray.
Sally Page continues to be club contact and if you have any queries please contact me.

East Sussex Cycle Festival – Firle Place, Lewes – BECC/VC Jubilee
On a hot July 9th-10th weekend at the festival, in its 2nd year, another opportunity to recruit new
members for both clubs, as we tested over 380 separate attempts on the skills course, and slightly
less than that on the i-Magics – so they were all well used! All these young riders can check their
times into the British Cycling website to see if they were the fastest. A fantastic attempt was made
on a uni-cycle around the skills course – a clear round too! Thanks to those that showed their support,
especially Ben Miller and his Dad who enjoyed camping and the strenuous rides over the downs, and to the
Goslings, Andrew Dunn, Ian Essex, the Atwoods and Keith Balcombe.

Go-Ride Open Day BECC/VC Jubilee
On Saturday 20th August BECC and VC Jubilee cycling clubs held our Open Day to coincide with the Tour
of Britain road race and to celebrate London’s success in getting the 2012 Olympics. The open day was
a national programme of coaching activities organised in partnership with British Cycling who provided
commemorative souvenirs for all participants and provided an opportunity to try some of the various
Olympic disciplines. In addition to our own club members, another 17 youngsters, 9 years and older
of mixed abilities attended the day, which was a great turn out. Many thanks to those that supported
the day especially: Keith and Su Balcombe, Rod McKenzie, Bob Harber, Paul Gosling, Mike Murray.

The day started with fantastic sunshine and a mountain bike ride along the South Downs Link. On our
return we then put to the test the challenge to race against Chris Hoy on the I-magic virtual reality
computer trainers that BECC received from a Sport England Awards for All application. We then went out
on to Adur Recreation ground and ran the Tour of Britain skills challenge, which helps with riders
balance, coordination, speed control, cornering, braking etc, all part of the Go-Ride skills programme.
All the grass root level skill development that all cyclists, future stars and Olympiads will require.
And the British Cycling Stage 1 Talent Tests, which is an identification process of raw cycling talent.
This hopefully leads to being on the Talent Team and having a support and coaching structure, which could
lead to being a future star and Olympiad.

There maybe another opportunity to tie in with the Tour of Britain to run something similar in 2006…

Revolution – Manchester Velodrome
A trip to Manchester was arranged to support Pete Mitchell and other local South East area talented
youth cyclists who were invited to the opening event of Revolution 9 at Manchester Velodrome on 18th
October 2005 to compete in the new youth Future starts competition. The Season 3 opened in style with
11 world champions and a fantastic night of racing. It featured more rainbow jerseys than ever seen at
any previous Revolution. The action across all youth and adult events was fantastic and with tremendous
support the atmosphere was one of the best Revolution events. And it was fabulous to see Pete ride in
VCJ and SE club colours at such a prestigious event.

Membership
Numbers were slightly down during and towards the end of 2005 compared to 2004, but we seem to be
maintaining a core group of riders. We will concentrate on our promotional activities again now that
we have more coaches. Having the new kit certainly turns some heads when we are out for a ride, so we
are getting noticed. We have a small selection of racing shirts for riders to borrow, anyone wanting
to buy their own, please see Sally Page.

Training/Conferences
We have been working closely with the Sussex Sports Partnership, British Cycling and Adur District
Council and volunteers have attended conferences, workshops etc to find out what is available with
regard to funding opportunities, or other coaching courses. We have to look forward in 2006 to
British Cycling new coaching course for 16 year olds and hope that some of our older members will
be interested in this, as we should be able to fund it through our grant.

Grants
This year we were successful in our Awards for All bid for coaching courses, first aid kits/courses
and cyclo-cross bikes to the value of £3280 in July 2005. If anyone is interested in becoming a coach,
please get in touch.

Barclays Spaces for Sports with coaches kit and cycling related equipment, eg stopwatches, bottles,
clipboards, cones as well as caps, bags and t-shirts.

Affiliations
We continue to be affiliated to the following bodies/organisations: British Cycling (BC), British
Schools Cycling Association (BSCA). Also we have affiliation under BECC for cycling time trials
and cyclo-cross. So if any member wishes to race time-trials (over 12 yrs) and cyclo-cross should
race under the “Brighton Excelsior CC” name.

Coaching activities
These have increased this year, due to our newly qualified coaches. More sessions have been run as
skills based, rather than “just going for a ride”, we will be pursuing this further into 2006. We have
also had the opportunity to visit Calshot indoor Velodrome on a number of occasions. This awesome
experience gives the rider such a rush and improves bike handling.

Social
Wednesday evening numbers are down, which we will hope to address in the new year with improved
planning and structured activities. However evening activities of bouldering on the climbing wall,
pool, football and table tennis all feature regularly.

Racing
Our members have attended numerous events this year and our prize presentation indicates the successes
of all our riders. New to some this year were 2-day stage races, time trialling and mountain bike cross
country and cyclo cross. We look forward to another season of activity at Preston Park Track and Hove
Park, where members can experience Track and Road racing and learn the different skills of each.
Limited time trialling opportunities are possible, as well as increased mountain bike and cyclo
cross events in the area.

Incidents/Accidents
Only 2 recorded in last 12 months – Dave Gerrey (coach), and a meningitis concern.

Planning for 2006
More structured VCJ young persons committee, more funding applications, more specific coaching
sessions, more trips, more racing. Let us know what you want… Diary is now on the website:
www.vcjubilee.co.uk look under News.

Please remember we look forward to hearing your comments on the activities we run at the club,
and of course volunteer support, so we can do more! If you are interested in volunteering or
coaching, please get in touch with Sally Page, Tel: 01273 843859, Mob: 07769 588915,
email: salandroy@supanet.com

An excellent day yesterday for 15 BECC and VCJ members at Calshot, many thanks to Anthony

the first time, and by the end were up on the blue line or above, great courage. Hope to see
you all at Preston Park next year. For those that missed me mention how cold it can get there -

November 2005

Pete joins in the cycling Revolution – PRESS RELEASE
Sussex based Pete Mitchell (VC Jubilee) and other local South East area talented youth cyclists were
invited to the opening event of Revolution 9 at Manchester Velodrome on 18th October 2005. The Season
3 opened in style with 11 world champions and a fantastic night of racing. It featured more rainbow
jerseys than ever seen at any previous Revolution. The action across all youth and adult events was
fantastic and with tremendous support the atmosphere was one of the best Revolution events.

Peter was competing in the new youth Future Stars competition which kicked off in style at Revolution
9 with some excellent racing and action throughout the girls and the boys events. With Raleigh as the
new sponsor the incentive for the young riders is huge as a 2006 Raleigh Road Bike is up for grabs to
the two competition winners.

The South East young riders (Pete Mitchell, Simon Lewis, Alex Aldham-Breary, Corrine Hall, Sophie Terry,
Gabriella Coates, Alice Monger-Godfrey) were amongst the best in the world, warming up on the cycle track
at the same time, with the likes of Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton, Chris Newton, Rob Hayles etc...
Although not racing against them, well not yet, the evening brought home to them the real possibilities
that they may one day be professional, world or Olympic cycling champions. Their own Future Stars races
against other youth cyclists from around the country, which consisted of the Devil Endurance, 1 Mile Dash,
5km Scratch Race produced some fast races, and the young riders did well considering not all had ridden at
such a large venue let alone with the massive crowds (~3000), showed that there is some real talent coming
into the sport and we should be set for some more UK champions to come.

Pete aged 15 from VC Jubilee youth development cycling club (www.vcjubilee.co.uk based in Shoreham-by-Sea),
was invited to the event, and performed superbly. Pete is on British Cycling’s Talent Team and has recently
been invited to attend the Olympic Development Programme sprint training – we wish him the best of luck with
this, we think he can do it!

Come and watch Pete at the next Revolution…
He’s also been invited to more of the Revolution series events, and VC Jubilee and Brighton Excelsior CC
members plan to go and support him again. See www.cyclingrevolution.com for more information. The next race
nights are on 19th Nov, 21st Jan and 18th Feb – try and give our local riders your support at these events.
Let Sally or Roy know if you are interested.

Cyclo-Cross bikes
we have now bought 2x Specialized TriCross bikes with our Awards for All grant. Many THANKS
must go to The Bike Store in Worthing as they did us a great deal. We can use them as cross and racing bikes
so a double/whammy. They are 52 and 54cm. Hopefully more members people will take part on the right equipment
for these events and enjoy the rewards.

October 2005

Revolution 9 - Manchester Veoldrome - Pete invited:
We've just had excellent news that Pete Mitchell VC Jubilee has been invited to ride in the Future Stars
event at Manchester Velodrome on Saturday 15th October in Revolution 9, for the South East Division team.
See: http://www.cyclingrevolution.com/ - other riders on the night will be Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton
and other world, olympic and Dutch riders. This is a fantastic opportunity for Pete and I hope that as
many of us as possible will go up and support him on the night (and be back in time for the BECC hill
climb on the 16th). I'd like to get something organised so we travel up together to be cheapest. Tickets
are £10 adults, £5 youths, £22 family (2x2) - best to book in advance from web or 0161 223 2244 . So
please let me know if you want to go and if you need a lift or can drive. We'd be leaving around 12-noon
and it will probably be after midnight back. Let me know what you're doing re tickets/transport ASAP -
01273 843859 / 07769 588915 - preferably by this weekend 8/9th Oct. Get those banners and your shouting
voices ready!!

Training rides:

To start on Sundays, the adults usually go out for long rides during the winter to build up endurance
for the next year, but we'd like to include some of the youngsters in some of them too. And on the
Sunday 9th we "plan" to meet at Preston Park track from 9.30am to get some of the newer adults getting
used to riding in a group before they go out on the road, and this would be great for the kids to join
in too. This is also opened to experienced riders so that they can assist and use it as a training session.
Hopefully no-one else will be using the facility, like cricket, if so, we'll have to ride from there and
find somewhere else, but we'll meet back there. So it'll be up to two hours. This will be on road bikes.

Then after the BECC hill climb on the 16th we'll go on a Sunday ride from Steyning Bostal at about
12-noon onwards, bring some food and drink. Max of two hours.

Deciding on how far and where you end up going depends on the ability of the group, so all are
welcome to join in, it will suit everyone.

Dont forget the track sessions:

marshals and helpers gratefully received, and of course lots of riders too!

Other London Cyclo cross/national league dates see: http://www.londonxleague.co.uk/dates.html

Club clothing:
For those that don't know you can buy club clothing. I have a price list and order form for any of
you that are interested in buying your own kit this year. VC Jubilee do have some shirts to lend
out for those that race from a grant we received before. However if you do buy one and grow out of
it, and its still in pretty good condition we do a swap size scheme ie you give us your small one
back and we'll give you a larger one, so once you buy one it should see you through a few years.
It does look good when we are all out in the same kit. We don't expect everyone to buy one as we
think they are quite expensive (£23 for a shirt), thats why we have some to lend out. So there's
no pressure to buy them.

If anyone is interested we have to make a block order to the suppliers before we can send any off,
thats why sometimes it takes ages to come through. However we have got some orders coming in so I
wanted to give you the opportunity of getting your order sent through soon. They may still take a
while to arrive, it depends how busy the supplier is.

Sizes are smaller than average (Italian), I have a couple you can try first.... please complete the
clothing form and return back to me with a cheque as soon as possible.

CALSHOT/NEWPORT CYCLE TRACK COACHING SESSIONS

Excellent news - there are some track sessions arranged/coached by Anthony Rogers and Vern McClelland,
which our members can attend. They would prefer those wanting to go to Newport (max 30) to have had some
track experience (and be over 12), so a few trips to Calshot first would be advisable, then go for the
    March Newport date.

If you're a newbie don't expect to be riding for all of the session time, sessions will be split for
novices and those with more experience. Anyway you'd get too dissy if you did ride for that amount of time!
Its usually quite/really cold at the tracks so take some longs too for riding and always take spare clothes
for waiting, snacks, drink and a flask.

I know you can hire bikes at both if you don't have your own. Bring your own helmets and shoes/pedals if you
don't want toe straps. So the sessions could be £10-£15 depending on numbers, plus bike hire (£5-£10) all well worth it.

    Sunday 26th February 9.30 – 12.30

There may be other dates to follow too...

So we can travel efficiently there and back, if you're interested please let me know which dates you want
to go and if you/your parents would be willing to drive, or you need a lift. I'll then let Anthony know so
he can keep an eye on numbers. VC Jubilee can't afford to hire a minibus again, so we'll be trying to get
as many youngsters there as possible via cars.

Let me know soon, email or phone. Many thanks to Anthony and Vern for organising these for Sussex league riders.

    Wednesday club night evenings

For those that don't know, club nights on Wednesday evenings have started again, from 7.00-8.30pm at the AOAC,
followed by Brighton Excelsior club nights from 8pm too.

And next week (28th Sept) VCJ have got the opportunity to use the new low ropes course at the centre at 7pm.
We used it this week and it was great to see people falling into shark infested waters, raging rapids, toxic
waste - the things your imagination can make you do!! Its like an obstacle course, with the emphasis on working
    together to achieve a result.

We will also be arranging some climbing sessions hopefully this year too. Other activities always include
football, table tennis, snooker, bike maintenance, cycle coaching, virtual reality cycling, other games etc...
If you want to do something specific too, just let us (Dave, Sally, Shelley, Roy, Ian etc) know and we'll help
    with organising it.

If you turn up, come upstairs in the centre (unless directed otherwise), please remember to sign yourself
in our book so we know whos there, and bring along 30p so that we can replace table tennis equipment, and
anything else that may get broken at the centre, as well as provide drinks, snacks etc for the evening.
Please also remember the centre is used by the general public for other activities and we should not make it
inconvenient for them to use it too, so please be thoughtful of others.

August 2005

The track and circuit race season is nearly over, and again VC Jubilee have featured prominently at
these events, the new kit really does shine out. Our adult club members from Brighton Excelsior are also
doing well at these events too and talking tactics with the youngsters, it is great to see both clubs in
the same strip. Our club members names are often reported on in Cycling Weekly, and on British Cycling
website there is a full report of the racing activities, some intense reading. If only they could leave
the fantastic cakes until the end of the races! I’m sure I’ve only mentioned this a couple of times!!
Well done to all the new members for their first racing season – Charlie, Ben and Alistair, they have
taken to it with such a great attitude. And those that return for another year at these events, (Ryan,
Rebecca, Josh, Daniel) their results show that determination, training, commitment and enjoyment all help.
Matt and Pete both have been riding up with the adults and have been stamping out their young talent very well.
Lets hope the cylco-cross season is as successful and fun.

Awards for All Grant £3280 granted to VC Jubilee
We have been successful in receiving a grant towards coaching courses, first aid courses/kits, and bikes.
This is a fantastic opportunity to get the right equipment and coaching available for the young people of
the club, so that they can achieve even higher standards of cycling ability. Many thanks must go to Roy Page,
who helped us prepare the successful application. We are considering getting racing bikes which will double up
into cyclo-cross bikes for the winter season. If you or someone you know is interested in coaching, then please
get in touch with Sally for more details. The next British Cycling course is in early 2006.

East Sussex Cycle Festival, Firle Place, Lewes 9-10 July 2005
The second year of this event proved its growing popularity, helped again by fantastic weather. British Cycling,
BECC and VC Jubilee shared a marquee and cycling arena with the Go-Ride skills challenge set up, along with
I-Magics, photos and BC and club information. The fastest skills riders and I-magic 2-lap event one each
date received Sport England t-shirts and the chance to compare their times on the BC Go-Ride website for
    the skills challenge.

We tested over 380 separate attempts on the skills course, and slightly less than that on the I-Magics –
so they were all well used! And a fantastic attempt was made on a uni-cycle around the course – a clear
    round too!

Thanks to those that showed their support, especially Ben Miller and his Dad who enjoyed camping and the
strenuous rides over the downs and the Goslings. Ben, Andrew Dunn, Ian Essex and Keith Balcombe for
supporting our events. I think Ryan had the most recorded times! We saw lots of other familiar faces,
so thanks to you too. Hope to see more next year, as the event grows again.

    Saturday morning sessions
We’ve continued to have a regular turn out on our Saturday morning MTB rides throughout the year, with
regular new starters, coming and unfortunately sometimes going. So now we have more coaches (and hopefully
even more to come) we’d like to start to structure the sessions a bit more. Depending on what coaches are
available and who turns up to ride, please see the dates for your diaries info page, or on the website, for
info various activities. The skills sessions are still a serious element to bike handling and improvement of
techniques when out riding. This will often be combined with a ride too, so they will still be fun. Still to
come are dates for trips to Calshot indoor cycling track (Southampton) again (fantastic event last year),
    Deers Leap MTB park, etc.

Don’t forget that we are meeting on the Saturday of the Bank Holiday weekend but not on the 3rd September -
we are meeting at Preston Park because the air show makes cycling around Shoreham a bit hard with the number
    of visitors.

    Wednesday evening sessions
Once the track/circuit race season is over, we plan to restart Wednesday club nights at the AOAC on 14th
September at 7.00pm until 8.30pm. This winter we hope to be able to use the climbing wall, and the new ropes
course at the centre. As well as run fun sessions, on fitness, I-Magic, table tennis, football, snooker, bike
maintenance, quizzes, games, videos etc. Please bring anything you want to play or do with you and any
suggestions, and we can get a programme organised.

Many thanks must go to all our coaches and volunteer staff for their support. Hope to see you all soon.
    Sally.
