08 August VCJ update

Now all too quickly the Preston Park track season is nearly over, I thought I should let you know about some other opportunities, races/events to carry you through the rest of the summer, some I hope you’ll be interested in attending, as they would complete a really successful year for VCJ members; you’ve all done so well.

First of all BECC are looking at designing some new club clothing, and attached is an outline of a shirt that I hope you’ll fill in and send back to be considered by the committee. The design is up to you, include the BECC wheel wings round logo and “VC Jubilee Brighton Excelsior CC Youth Development” and send your entries back to me or a coach/volunteer before the end of this September.

Then its into the Cyclo-cross season… we are promoting an event again in Stanmer Park on 18th November, please can you put it in your calendars now, as I’d really like to ask for lots of help with course layout, marshals, catering, scoring, etc, etc

Sat 13th July - VCJ Open Day

Some of the youth riders showed of their skills on the bike and in the air at VC Jubilees Open Day on Saturday 14th July at the AOAC in Shoreham-by-Sea. Other activities included iMagic virtual reality cycling where riders can compete "virtually" against the clock on an indoor cycling velodrome. Fastest time of the day was a joint time by Greg Blinch and Ben Miller with 0.33 seconds for 500m, which is fast.

There was lots of interest on the day for new membership, many of the newcomers having an opportunity to try their riding skills out, and receive a British Cycling qualified coaching session. The limbo was also set up as a challenge, as well as jumps - some riders were able to get under what others could jump over!

VC Jubilee runs coaching sessions every Saturday 10-12noon usually starting from the Adur Outdoor Activities Centre for anyone aged 9-18, those under 9 can come with their parents/guardian too. Everyone is welcome, helmets must be worn at all times. A limited number of bikes and helmets are available to borrow on sessions. Saturdays are usually mountain bike and skills sessions, other events and venues are arranged, please see our website and calendar for up to date news.

The club are also involved in other cycling disciplines: track, road, time trial, cyclocross, etc and racing too. We have some successful riders; Peter Mitchell 16, who has gone from Sussex to regional to national champion and now all the way to the European track championships last week and has won a Silver medal, and is now on the British Cycling Olympic Development Programme. Also Charlie Beeny 15 has been performing really well and is 2006/2007 Sussex Cyclocross champion and in MTB cross country national ranking is top ten by attending some national events and hopes to get on the Talent Team, hes also currently leading the Sussex track league in his age category. This is just one aspect of the clubs activities, and we also have fun and family sessions, but we are connected to the pathway that can lead to world class performances for those that want to. Many of the club members try the track sessions on Wednesday through the summer at Preston Park too, and get a lot of experience of road and track racing, as well as local mountain biking racing too.

Sun 8th July - Tour de France Nestle Nesquik Event

Congratulations to Iain Carr, Amy Barnes, Tom Norris, Naomi and Angus Goldsmith who were lucky enough to enter the Tour de France Nestle Nesquik La P'tite Boucle racing the last 1km of the Tour route into Cantebury. See British Cyclings report and pictures

February Newsletters

Calshot Saturday/Sunday 3rd – 4th March 2007 for PPYCC and VC Jubilee

PPYCC and VC Jubilee are running a velodrome session at Calshot activity centre in Hampshire on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th March 2007. The sessions will take place on Saturday from 17.15 until 20.15, this is for youth riders only, and Sunday from 10.00 to 13.00, this is aimed at adult riders but if space permits older youth riders may join in. It is best to arrive about half an hour before the start to ensure we maximise our booked time.

Below are the details and costings for Calshot, please note the rather complex pricing options [Calshot pricing is so complex they do not even print a full list for the public] and details about the track itself. Please make cheques payable to VC Jubilee. You may opt in to as much or as little as you like. Parents are welcome to join in by staying with us, and even cycling on the Sunday morning.

On Sunday morning we plan to offer our youth riders a choice from a road ride [run by PPYCC coaches], mountain bike ride [run by VC Jubilee coaches] or a repeat visit to the track.

For PPYCC members we will take our club track bikes and we may have spares for some Jubilee riders. If not borrowing one of our bikes or bringing your own then on the day please pay the hire charge for track bikes direct to Calshot. Track bike hire is £6 for half a day [£2.40 for Under 18s].

The track can be extremely cold, and yet heat up very quickly if sunny, thus it is recommended that both shorts and longs are brought for riding and a warm top or coat. Please do not wear baggy clothing as this can become entangled when riding. The sessions are 3 hours and so there will be time spent in-between rides waiting one’s turn. A book, game boy, top trumps etc. would be useful whilst waiting between activities. Due to the long period a snack and a drink is essential, water is freely available at the centre. Although meals are available from the bar you may wish to bring a packed meal for the evening.

All members, without their parents, will be supervised during the evening by club coaches.

I would like to know who is coming as soon a.s.a.p. please confirm attendance and how much of the weekend you will be taking part in even if you are not ready to send the money.

VCJ activities on Sat 10th February 2007

On Saturday 10th February, we'd like to visit Bedgebury Forest in Goudhurst, Kent for our club session for a change, and spend the day there, its a great place to cycle off road. See http://www.forestry.gov.uk/bedgebury

There are a couple of opportunities: firstly British Cycling South East Go-Ride Coach, John Scripps is running a MTB coaching session, these are great fun, a full quality MTB coaching session, which takes in all the massive area covered by Bedgebury Forest, including most of its mtb single tracks, drop offs, bomb holes, downhills, oh yes and a few up hills! He knows the area very well now and where all the best bits are.

The session runs from 9.30am - 3pm and costs ONLY £5, and is targetted for those 11-16yrs. However I know some of you are 10yrs and quite capable of taking part. An application form has to be completed for John, this and the money can be taken on the day. He is also running one on Sunday if anyone would like to continue the coaching sessions. You'll also receive a British Cycling Go-Ride goodie bag! Please see the British Cycling website and to go Go-Ride and Young People and look for Winter Activity Programmes.

Secondly Bedgebury Forest is great for family riding too, many trails go around the forest, and on route you'll find activity places, climbing frames, big rope snakes, swings, lakes, pinetum (no bikes in this bit) etc, etc.

Some of the older riders can also go and enjoy themselves on some of the technical sections with one of our coaches.

So the plan would be to try and get as many people riders/families there as possible with most taking part in Johns session, so we'll have to sort out transport and will be asking for volunteers/help in transporting bikes too. Those on the coaching session need to plan to leave Shoreham at 8am, to be there in time. There is a cafe and visitor centre there, however it can get busy so I'd recommend everyone takes a packed lunch and drinks (those on the coaching session must). The idea is we can all meet up at lunch time at the visitor centre. This means that there would not be a session at the AOAC on Saturday 10th Feb.

Hopefully when we get to go again to the Forest we can play on Go-Ape - an amazing high wire forest adventure course, which should be finished at the end of March.

So please let myself or Dave Gerrey know if you want to go on Johns session or come as a family, and if you need transport, or if you are able to help provide transport, as soon as possible.

Many thanks, look forward to hearing from you soon.

PS more news about Calshot track activity weekend 3-4th March to follow soon ...
