Membership/Coaching activities

The youth development club provides opportunities for young people between the ages of 9 and 18. However we'd like to encourage those under 9 to join, but require parental presence. From 18 they are able to join the adult section of our club called Brighton Excelsior Cycling Club. All adults working with VC Jubilee members are qualified to the appropriate level. The Club Contact holds copies of their qualifications and first aid certificates. They are also police checked before they are able to work with the clubs young people. You can read more about our volunteers by following this link to our Coaches and Volunteers page. We follow the policies and procedures in the British Cycling Handbook for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults (March 2003). We are a National Governing Body recognised club, please see www.britishcycling.org.uk for further information on our GO-RIDE accreditation.

We welcome parents/guardians to all training and competitions and value your support. We are keen to try and involve parents/guardians in the club and would like to invite you to our evening club sessions on Wednesdays to get to know other helpers and parents and find out more about the club. Also, if you are interested, you can join us on our rides, or become a qualified coach.

The club has a small membership fee (£15) for January-December membership, which covers all Saturday rides, use of the club HQ, spare cycling equipment, coaching activities etc, other events may have additional charges. Please download the CLUB MEMBERSHIP FORM. In addition we can offer a hire charge for a club shirt. If you would like more equipment, please see the News section for the appropriate year to see the order form and costs. For the safety of the young person it is important that the club is informed of any medial condition or allergies that may be relevant should they fall ill or be involved in an accident while at a club session, under our care.

Once the form is complete please pass it to the Club Contact or bring to a session. By becoming a member of the club, the young person and their parent/guardian are agreeing to abide by the clubs code of conducts. Please refer to the membership form and Club Handbook for more details. We welcome all members of society, therefore if you require additional support to participate in cycle sport please discuss your requirements with the Club Contact. We have a number of bikes and helmets available for use to assist members participate.

We encourage youngsters to become members of "British Cycling", as this offers other benefits and personal accident insurance depending on what level is applied for, please complete the BC form as appropriate. As a member of VC Jubilee we are able to offer discount on BC membership - please see the Club Contact for more details.

The area we ride in

VC Jubilee is ideally situated right on the doorstep of the South Downs. We are based in Shoreham by sea which is a coastal town between Brighton and Worthing. The club is based at the Adur Outdoor Activity Centre (AOAC), right by the river, and we are only 10 - 15 minutes cycling from the South Downs Way, the longest bridleway in the South of England. This gives us a choice of bike rides each week which helps keep the club members interested and provides them with different terrain.

Our main routes stretch from the Cissbury Ring area through to Devil's Dyke, which give us a lot of options to tailor the route to the skill level of the riders and to the weather conditions. We also are within a short distance of the Downs Link which joins the South Downs to the North Downs. This is a route that follows an old railway and is therefore quite flat, ideal for the younger members or the 'older' leaders.

Not only is the area good for cycling, but a whole host of other activities are available for the family or the more adventurous among us. The AOAC is right by the River Adur, which means water sports such as canoeing and kayaking are easily accessible whether you are a beginner or an expert. Sailing is another popular activity, with the river opening out into Shoreham harbour and then the sea. Inland, handgliding and paragliding can be seen at Steyning Bowl and Devil's Dyke. When the conditions are right Devil's Dyke can have a sky full of people floating about on the thermals created by the slopes of the hills.

It's not just the activities that attract people to the area. The scenery is fantastic with numerous areas of outstanding natural beauty to sit and relax in. The history of the area also provides interesting days out for families, with several historic towns and villages as well as ancient buildings.

But back to the cycling. The area also has several cycling clubs which means that there are opportunities for competition and meeting other clubs. Hopefully this web site will go some to meeting more clubs and promote cycling amongst youngsters and their parents.
